Q. To Myself Pro

A. To Myself Pro

Project Gutenberg
Wikisource

About To Myself

To Myself brings you one quote a day from Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus: in the app, in Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, and in an optional morning notification. Every quote is copied word for word from a public-domain translation and shows its author, work, book, section and translator. Tap the round “+” button at the bottom right of a quote to save it to Favorites, share it, or open its source.

FAQ

Q. How do I add a widget?

A. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for To Myself. There are small, medium and large Home Screen widgets and a rectangular Lock Screen widget. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, and add it in the widget area. Touch and hold a widget and choose Edit Widget to pick its quotes and theme (To Myself Pro) for each widget. The quotes are stored on your iPhone, so widgets work offline.

Q. Why does a widget show a different quote from the app?

A. If the current quote doesn’t fit a widget, the widget shows another quote that does, so a quote is never cut off. Small and Lock Screen widgets switch to shorter quotes more often. Tap the widget to open the quote it shows.

Q. How do I get the morning notification, and can I change the time?

A. Turn on Morning Quote under Notifications in Settings. The app asks for permission at that point. Choose the time in the same place (8:00 by default). The notification contains the whole quote; if it is cut off in Notification Center, touch and hold it to read it all. If notifications are not allowed, tap Allow Notifications in Settings to open iOS Settings. Without notifications, the widgets and the app still show a quote every day.

Q. Notifications stopped after a while.

A. Each time you open the app, it schedules notifications for the next 60 days. If you don’t open the app for more than 60 days, notifications stop when the scheduled ones run out. Open the app once to schedule the next 60 days.

Q. What does To Myself Pro include?

A. To Myself Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It unlocks:

  • Seven themes, each with its own classic typeface and texture: Parchment, Marble, Dawn, Ink, Stone, Olive and Midnight. Use one in the app, and pick a theme for each widget.
  • Image cards: share a quote as an image in your theme, with its source
  • A new quote every 6, 3 or 1 hour instead of once a day
  • Themed collections: Death, Anger, Adversity, Time, Other People, What Is Up to You, Judgment and Duty. Read them, or show them in widgets and notifications.

Widgets, daily quotes, sources, favorites and notifications stay free. Buy Pro from Unlock To Myself Pro in Settings, or by tapping a locked item.

Q. How do I get Pro back on a new iPhone or after reinstalling?

A. Sign in with the Apple Account you used to buy it and tap Restore Purchases in Settings or on the purchase screen. You won’t be charged again. Favorites and settings are stored only on your iPhone and are removed when you delete the app.

Q. How do I change the app’s language?

A. The app is available in English and Japanese and follows your iPhone’s language. To change it for To Myself only, go to iOS Settings > Apps > To Myself > Language.

Q. Are the quotes translated into other languages?

A. No. The quotes are always in English, whatever the app’s language. They are copied word for word from the original English translations and are never translated or paraphrased.

Q. Where do the quotes come from?

A. From these public-domain translations. The translator, George Long, died in 1879, more than 70 years ago.

  • Marcus Aurelius, Meditations (tr. George Long, 1862), from Project Gutenberg
  • Epictetus, Discourses and Enchiridion (tr. George Long, 1877), from Wikisource

Book and section numbers follow the source edition. A quote taken from part of a section is marked Excerpt, and “…” shows where text was left out. Words in [brackets] were added by the translator and are kept. See Settings > About the Texts in the app for details.

Q. How do I read the passage in the original text?

A. Tap the “+” button at the bottom right of a quote, then Source. The passage opens in the source edition in a Safari view inside the app. Source pages are on external websites such as Project Gutenberg and Wikisource, so an internet connection is needed.
